The Web2 Inertia

Despite the enthusiasm toward building a vibrant decentralized world, so far the identification mechanisms in web3 have been directly taken from web2. Most platforms still use a simple username as user identity. Even .eth addresses are re-using the same web2 infrastructural ideas.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with building upon earlier technologies, in this case it is hindering the decentralized aspirations of the web3 space. If this path were to continue, then users would once again be forced to be locked-in to large platforms for another generation of technology.
